TEHRAN - The head of the Iranian civil registration organization said on Friday that the population of Iranians has reached 80 million, the IRNA news agency reported. Two million out of this figure live abroad, Mohammad Nazemi Ardakani said. Nazemi Ardakani who was addressing the Friday Prayer worshipers in Tehran said that Iran now holds one percent of the world’s population, ranking 10th in Asia and third in the region. According to Nazemi Ardakani, there live about 46 people in one square kilometer in Iran, however, in densely-populated countries, there are about 360 people living in the same area.
Following is the detailed information provided by Nazemi Ardakani on Iran’s population:
30 percent of Iran’s population is concentrated in villages and 70 percent in the cities; 49 percent of the population is female and 51 percent is male; 24 percent is below 15 and 31 percent between 15 to 30, about 39 percent between 30 to 64, while 6 percent is 60 and above.
He also said that 14 percent of Iranians are not interested in procreation, while 10 percent have one child. He explained that the estimates reveal that Iran experiencing demographic window, adding that, however, the situation will not remain the same because the country is facing ageing population. The figures show the average annual child birth is 1.4 million, while the death rate comes to 400,000. The report also reveals reduction in the rate of both marriage and birth and rise in the number of death and divorce. Demographic window is that period of time in a nation's demographic evolution when the proportion of population of working age group is particularly prominent. This occurs when the demographic architecture of a population becomes younger and the percentage of people able to work reaches its height. Typically, the demographic window of opportunity lasts for 30–40 years depending upon the country.
